The main aspect that separates man from any other animal is believed to be agriculture. We grow different kinds of fruits and vegetables which are rich in proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. But as we are very much interested in making food tasty, we process the food too much and convert it into fast and junk food, which diminishes the nutritional value.
We all know that children should take adequate amount of fruits and vegetables for maintaining their right energy levels. But children eat for taste rather than health(like most of the adults).Conveying the children about the goodness of vegetables is a good idea but, it seldom helps in making them interested in taking them. Parents have to play very smart tricks to make their kids eat them if they are picky eaters.

Fruits

1) Juice: Children feel disinterested in eating certain fruits like oranges, mausambi as they feel lazy to peel. Though the goodness of fiber is missed, juice is a better option as they can drink without effort. If they are not prone to any allergies, chilled juice is a good alternative.

2) Milk shakes: Preparing delicious milk shakes will make children come for more and they are the best in summer season.

3) Fruits as toppings: Add fruits to their chilled ice cream or custard and let them relish the taste as you enjoy the sight of their fruit intake.

Vegetables:

1) Different types of rice: Children these days enjoy spicy food. They do not like to have curries, but when the same vegetables are added to different kinds of rice items like biriyani, fried rice, tomato rice, coconut rice, green rice, etc; they do not fuss about them. The vegetables have to be finely cut and chopped so that they do not remove them while eating.

2) Noddles: Maggi is all time favourite for all the children in India. Add all the suitable vegetables, like tomato, onion, carrot, beans etc; to make the noodles, healthy as well as tasty.

3) Chat: Kids love to eat the chats prepared in chat bhandars. You can prepare the chats even at home by adding finely chopped vegetables of your choice. Please find the recipes for chats on this site for more ideas.

4) Sandwich: Let your kid be more creative. Provide your child with the necessary toppings for a sandwich and ask him/her to prepare a sandwich for the family.

5) Soup: Soup is an ideal item that can be served as soon as your child is back from school. Experiment with different kinds of vegetable soups. This sometimes is better than other items as the child cannot see the vegetable he/she dislikes. You can add pepper or some other item to hide the taste of the item disliked by the child yet providing him/her with the goodness of it.

6) Manchurian: Prepare this Chinese dish with all the vegetables finely chopped and diced. As the balls are deep fried, the taste of the vegetables vanishes.

So provide your child with the right amounts of fruits and vegetables which build the necessary resistance power and keep them hail and healthy.

Happy parenting

Everyday in newspaper or TV you come across many different items which are healthy. Your colleagues or friends too give new tips and suggestions to make your kid’s diet more nutritional. But, not all kids welcome new food. They love to stick to their regular diet. They dislike tasting dishes or vegetables or fruits which they have not eaten before. Here are a few tips to make them give a try to new food.

1) No thank you bite: A “No Thank-You Bite” is a common name for a rule that says children must try at least one bite of all the foods on the table. Some people have also called this a “Thank the Cook Bite,” Keep the new dish along with the regular food. When they say no to the new item, just ask them to taste and say “no thank you”. Make this a rule. If they say no again, do not force them to eat. Ask them what is wrong with the item, like is it very sweet or sour? Would they like any side dish with that? Can the food be modified to suit their taste? Get the review and modify the food. If they still say no way, there is very little you can do about that. But, make the “no thank you bite” compulsory.

2) Eat the item: Children hate to eat anything that is served only to them. You have to eat the new food along with them. Suppose you are serving them ragi malt, make it a part of your diet too.

3) Serve the new food in a different way: Cut the new fruit or salad into an attractive way (in a new bowl if possible). Try to blend it with the taste the child loves, like, add pepper or chat masala.

4) Talk about it: Tell them that you used to love that item when you were young. Tell them what it contains and what are the benefits of eating that. Tell them the source from where you came to know about that. Talk anything which will attract the child to taste it.

Remember that the new food is not a medicine. If they say no even after tasting it, it should not be made compulsory. We parents too dislike many items though we know the advantages of eating them. Look out for a different item with the same nutritional value and a great taste for your child.

Why should children learn cooking?

Every parent might not have been a fussy eating kid. But, everyone would agree that they started eating their food with much more interest only after they started cooking. You now relish even regular food more than before if you have made that yourself. The same law applies to your kid too. Involve your child in what ever you are preparing. They will definitely become less fussy at the dining table.

How to involve them in cooking?

Take them with you when you buy vegetables

Ask them to get the vegetables from refrigerator.

Allow them to cut if they are old enough.

Let them watch how you prepare.

Let them add a masala or some paneer depending on what you are preparing.

Do not make the whole process compulsory to them, just do it casually. Do not pay attention to the wastage as you know, they are just learning. Frequently correcting them will annoy them. Let them experiment. They might turn out be better cooks than you!!!

What recipes can you teach them?

You can first teach them omelet, noodles or simple and healthy vegetable chat, which will only involve mixing of vegetables that you cut and adding spices. They themselves will want to learn more.

At the dining table do not forget to mention to the other members of the family of their contribution to the dish. Let them pass their honest comments. The comments will make them participate again in cooking.
They will definitely love to eat what they have prepared.
Letting them cook not only makes them more responsible but also they will get an exposure to the hardwork involved in it. This will definitely change their attitude towards food.

You always get phone calls from friends asking for recipes for your special items. You take much more care and pain to cook for your beloved kid. But…………….He/she doesn’t want to eat and always fusses at the dining table.

This is very annoying.

Don’t worry. You’re not alone! Every home has a fussy eating kid. They test your patience, you feel like beating them or tying them up and putting all the food into their mouth. Sometimes you just starve as you don’t feel like eating when they are going empty stomach. But, that is not a solution. Remember that this action of yours will not fill their stomach. Then what is the solution?

Here, a number of ways are suggested which might make your child eat. As every child is unique, some might work for some kids and some might for some others. Try all of them.

1) Don’t force or threaten: It is not fair on our part to punish them if they do not eat. We too do not feel like eating so times. Imagine how we would we feel if someone threatens us a punishment when we are not in a mood to eat. This also makes kids dislike food more. Instead you can follow the next step.
/* recipelargerect */
google_ad_slot = "9478421085";

2) Starve them: Remember the time when your kid was a new born baby. You never had to force him/her milk. Instead they would cry when they felt hungry. Hunger is a natural thing. When they say no to food, plead them. When they are adamant, leave them. Do that everyday. Let them play. How many days can he/she be hungry. Let them experience hunger. Just keep cooking delicious food everyday, keep the junk food away. They will come back for regular food after a few days. This of course seems as a harsh way, but it is better than threatening them, as that will have a psychological affect and change their attitude towards their food intake. Remember that you do this only when the child is healthy and is on a vacation home, as not eating might cause dizziness. Do not show your frustration when he/she says no to food. Instead say ok and move on with your lunch and dinner. Pretend as if his “not eating” does not bother you. Be patient and you will see the results soon.

3) Make the food attractive: Kids love colors, magic, decoration, cartoons and so on. Bring out your creativity. Serve the food in the most attractive way possible. Make faces with sauce. Cut salads in different shapes. Ask them to guess what you have made. Change their serving bowls from time to time. Let them choose their plates from the shop.

4) Involve them in cooking : This will make them feel more responsible. They will be curious to know about the preparation methods. They definitely will be more interested in eating food that they have participated in preparing rather than something which has been made with all the effort that they never see.

5) Set timetable: Be realistic when you serve food to them. Agreed that you can afford to feed them a variety of dishes. But, remember that he/she might not have the capacity to take them. Always pestering them to eat this and that will also make them dislike food. Give a proper gap between the feedings. Let them feel hungry. Every child who is healthy does feel hungry as we feel. If you are going to feed a full meal, then make sure that they do not eat chips or other snacks just before that as they are very filling to the tummy. Try to maintain specific times for their food. They will automatically feel hungry at the particular time they are supposed to eat (if they are not gulping anything in between).

6) Let the child decide the menu: Children love if you take their advice. Ask them the menu once in a while.

7) Same meal time: Try to coincide the child’s meal time to the family’s meal time. This is a traditional way of eating too. Probably eating together is one of the reasons that kids were less fussy in olden days. Do not be very strict regarding the way they are eating and do not say things like they are fat or thin while they are taking food. This will only annoy them. Just serve the common food and pretend as if you are not noticing how they are eating. Start a conversation, so that they are involved in that and they finish their food before they realize.

Happy parenting
